Daddy Yankee: Gasolina

Reggaeton is the music of choice for the Peruvian Discotecas and Daddy Yankee is one of the two or three biggest artists. Chances are, sooner or later you’re going to walk into someplace and around one in the morning they’re going to stop playing salsa and meringue and throw on “Gasolina.” You’ll be in for a treat too because there has never been a song penned in any language that can so make drunk young girls shimmy up to you and start grinding away (who doesn’t like that).

Anyway the song’s called “Gasolina” because of the phallic nature of the gas pump handle…obviously:

And when it’s inserted:

Ok, ok….it’s not Shakespeare (although, let’s face it, sexual references are far more prevalent in Shakespeare than any college professor ever likes to broadcast, “they’re making the beast with two backs…” etc.).

So anyway, here’s the lyrics for Daddy Yankee’s “Gasolina” with an English translation (this should be interesting):

(Who’s this?)
(Da-Ddy!)
(Yan-Kee!)

Unito mambapa? who knows…but the rest is: let my girls start their engines
Zumbale mabo pa means nothing to me either…
they better get ready because what’s coming is what they’re going to get
(Duro!) Mami, ya yo se que tu no te me vas a quitar…
Hard! Mami, I know what you’re not taking away from me
(Duro!)
Hard! What I like is what you’re taking away
(Duro!)
Hard! Every weekend she goes out to party
(Duro!) Mi gata no para de janguear, porque…
My girl [they’re using “cat” for girl…not recommended in polite conversation] won’t stop janguear? {let’s just call it “partying”] because
A ella le gusta la gasolina
she likes gasoline
(Da me mas gasolina!)
give me more gasoline
Como le encanta la gasolina
how she loves the gasoline
(Da me mas gasolina!)
give me more gasoline
A ella le gusta la gasolina
(Da me mas gasolina!)
Como le encanta la gasolina
(Da me mas gasolina!)

Ella prende las turbinas
She turns on the turbines
No discrimina
She doesn’t descriminate
She doesn’t miss a single party on the marquee
Se asicala hasta pa’ la esquina
She climes up to the corner
and she looks so good that she blends with the shadows
Asesina, me domina
assassin, she dominates me
Janguea en carros, motoras y limosinas
Janguea? in cars, bikes and limosines

Llena su tanque de adrenalina
fill her tank with adrenaline
Cuando escucha reggaeton en las bocinas
when you hear reggaeton on the horns

A ella le gusta la gasolina
(Da me mas gasolina!)
Como le encanta la gasolina
(Da me mas gasolina!)
A ella le gusta la gasolina
(Da me mas gasolina!)
Como le encanta la gasolina
(Da me mas gasolina!)

Aqui nosotros somos los mejores, no te me ajores
We’re the best, don’t “ajorar” me
En la pista nos llaman “Los Matadores”
on the dance floor they call us “the killers”
Tu haces que cualquiera se enamore
you make it that anyone falls in love with you
Cuando bailas al ritmo de los tambores
when you dance to the rhythm of the drums
this is for the girls of all colors
Pa’ las mayores, pa’ las menores
for the old, for the young
for those that are more foxes than hunters
for the women that don’t shut off their motors
Tenemos tu y yo algo pendiente
You and I have something pending
Tu me debes algo y lo sabes
You owe me something and you know it
Conmigo ella se pierde
with me she loses
No le rinde cuentas a nadie
don’t surrender stories to anyone
Tenemos tu y yo algo pendiente
You and I have something pending

(Duro!) Mi gata no para de janguear, porque…

A ella le gusta la gasolina
(Da me mas gasolina!)
Como le encanta la gasolina
(Da me mas gasolina!)
A ella le gusta la gasolina
(Da me mas gasolina!)
Como le encanta la gasolina
(Da me mas gasolina!)

Yep, a musical masterpiece. You’ll understand it better when you’ve heard it played in a rockin’ disco at 4 in the morning.
