Taxi at the Ovalo de Miraflores

I like this photo just because it gives you…I guess a vertical panoramic view of the Ovalo de Miraflores.  Seems like everyone in this image is looking for a Taxi (the guy in the center is bending over a taxi…or maybe he’s just buying drugs).  I also like the fact that the guy’s license plate number is “SOB.”  That has a meaning for English speakers who enjoy vulgarity…such as myself.

About 2001 when I first went to Peru, I would have been nervous about standing in the Ovalo de Miraflores and taking a picture.  Part of it was because I was a little jumpier back then than I am now, but the other part is that the Ovalo de Miraflores has gotten quite a bit safer throughout the years.
Back then, I used to see this crazy thief who would rob people and then dive into the window of a nearby getaway car.  The car, which was driven by his buddes, would peal off into the distance.  It seemed like a lot of risk to take to rob a cell phone or whatever…but hey, desperate people.  It used to be that I’d see something like that happen every week or so, but honestly I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen anything like that in Lima.
Anyway, the Ovalo de Miraflores is also a great place to go and get some of those dollar menus from McDonald’s.  S/. 5 for two pieces of chicken…awesome!
